The most destructive thing a musician can do is start worrying about whether or not other people will like the music. Fuck other people. They're not in the band. Just make music that stimulates you and don't second-guess yourself.
- Steve Albini
Fiction, poetry, thoughts on Dungeons & Dragons and other RPGs, Adeptus Titanicus and Warhammer, music, art, and random creativity. Also, from time to time, cats.
This left me feeling very sad.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Albini's death hit me really hard, much harder than I thought it would, perhaps in part because I really did not see it coming. I never worked directly with him, but I have friends who have. One of the guys in my current band did some recording at Electrical Audio, and I've been there a few times. I grew up literally next door to two members of the Poster Children. Albini was a great, no-bullshit Chicago guy. I gather he was kind of an edgelord in his earlier years, but I think as he grew he took ownership of that part of himself and changed. Certainly I was kind of an edgelord myself, so I don't have any room to judge. I have a great amount of respect for his contributions to his chosen art, and by the accounts I have heard he was fair and decent in his business and personal dealings, something all too rare in the music industry.
